As it happens, we get asked both questions. Many masters-level, certificated tutors charge significantly higher rates. Lesson preparation, ongoing training, and business expenses make tutoring a challenging venture, and many find it impossible to stay in business long-term. It’s very important to us that we’re available as a consistent ongoing resource for our students, but we also understand that life is expensive! Unlike “tutor mills” that charge high rates and have high turnover, we work hard to keep prices as low as possible while maintaining superlative quality that will be available to you for years to come.

The more online resources that are available, the more important it is to maintain reliable human connection. A tutor provides authentic feedback and serves as a guide to help you make fast progress with confidence. We encourage you to use all quality sources available, and we continually update our knowledge of free resources so that we can recommend tools for your ongoing improvement. Keep in mind that, as powerful as AI can be, it is often incorrect. It can apply information out of context, exclude important details, and invent (hallucinate) falsehoods. A tutor can course-correct your learning to ensure that you are practicing skills correctly.

Ample peer-reviewed research tells us that anxiety among students is at an all-time high with a dramatic increase since 2019. (Stay tuned for detailed blog coverage.) You might hear people—even educators—belittling the impact of anxiety on student performance and health. High expectations are wonderful, but a “toughen up!” approach is limited and can be damaging. Smooth Schooling tutors are trained in supportive methods to increase each student’s confidence, sense of perspective, and healthy approach to academic study. We work with students to separate feedback from personal criticism, recognize progress, and feel part of a welcoming academic community.

We are not therapists, and students suffering acute anxiety symptoms should seek help from a trained mental health provider. We are, however, part of what researchers call “alloparenting,” the supportive community in a person’s life that helps to reinforce and augment parental guidance.

Adults, this holds true for you as well. We all need community, and learning is a lifelong journey. At Smooth Schooling, we serve as partners in making that journey a calm and rewarding one.

Qualifications, dedication, a team approach, consistency, and flexible scheduling distinguish us in the marketplace. We choose to be a small group of proven tutors who communicate regularly for training and troubleshooting. The huge tutoring sites do employ some terrific tutors, but they tend to have high turnover. It’s frustrating to find a great tutor only to be searching for another tutor shortly after you’ve started.

Many sites employ tutors with experience in a field but little ability to help other people gain knowledge and skills efficiently. Some college students make good tutors, but broader experience, targeted instructional training, and dedication to their students are rare qualities to find in combination among that cohort. Turnover also is high among college student-tutors whose lives are changing rapidly.
